Merchant Fact Check

You do not need a $2,000/month Shopify Plus plan to sell in Euros, Pounds, Australian Dollars, and Yen with native checkout conversion. All standard Shopify plans (Basic, Shopify, Advanced) include multi-currency support through Shopify Payments and Shopify Markets. Here is how to configure it in under 10 minutes without writing a single line of Liquid code.

1. Prerequisites: What You Need First

Before activating multiple currencies, ensure you meet the following baseline:

  • Shopify Payments Activated: Multi-currency native checkout requires Shopify Payments as your primary gateway. (If you operate in a region without Shopify Payments, third-party apps can display currency estimates, but checkout will settle in your base store currency).
  • Clean Store Base Currency: Set your default currency (e.g. USD, EUR, or GBP) in Settings → Store Details.

2. Step-by-Step: Enabling International Currencies

Step 1: Open Shopify Markets

In your Shopify Admin, click Settings (gear icon bottom left) → Markets. You will see your primary market (e.g. United States) and an "International" or country-specific market.

Step 2: Add Target Country Markets

Instead of grouping all foreign countries into one generic "International" bucket, create dedicated markets for key revenue regions:

  • European Union Market: Add Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands (Currency: EUR €).
  • United Kingdom Market: Add United Kingdom (Currency: GBP £).
  • Japan Market: Add Japan (Currency: JPY ¥).
  • Australia & New Zealand Market: Add Australia (AUD) and New Zealand (NZD).

Step 3: Enable Local Currencies & Price Rounding

Inside each market, click Products and pricing:

  1. Check Show prices to customers in their local currency.
  2. Toggle on Price Rounding. Choose a rounding rule that matches local consumer expectations:
    • For EUR / GBP: Round to .00 or .95 (e.g. €39.00 instead of €39.24).
    • For JPY: Set decimal places to 0 (e.g. ¥5,500 instead of ¥5,521.80).

3. Setting Up Automatic IP Geolocation & Currency Switching

Enabling multi-currency in the admin is only half the battle; shoppers must actually see their currency when they arrive.

To deliver a world-class shopping experience:

  • Auto-Detect Geolocation: When a buyer from Frankfurt visits, detect their German IP and automatically suggest switching to the Germany (EUR) market.
  • Language & Currency Synergy: Never show Euros with English descriptions or USD with French descriptions. When switching to French, automatically align the currency to EUR.

4. 3 Costly Currency Mistakes to Avoid

// Mistake #1: Display-Only Currency Switchers
Warning: Many free Shopify apps only change the visual currency on the product page.
When the customer clicks checkout, the price switches back to USD.
Result: Up to 40% checkout drop-off caused by hidden FX fee fears.

Always test the checkout flow yourself: Add an item to cart in EUR, proceed to the checkout screen, and confirm the final charge button displays in EUR.

5. Seamless Currency & Language Switching with GP Translate

GP Translate natively ties into your Shopify Markets setup. Our switcher widget allows shoppers to toggle both language and currency simultaneously, saving DOM overhead and keeping your store running at 100/100 PageSpeed.
